It’s called the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” but it is so much more than that. With the emerald green waters and sugary beaches, Destin is simply the summer paradise of the South. Hundreds of boaters regularly park their boats off an area known as Crab Island and spend the day wading in the water and socializing with like-minded participants that want to soak up the sun while being half submerged. Other activities include playing at countless championship-style golf courses, shopping in the high-end specialty stores and discount outlets, and enjoying a nightlife that borrows influences from Key West, New Orleans, and Downtown Disney to create an energetic, yet laid back style unique to Destin.
Accommodations in the Destin area are numerous and impressive. Beachside hotels, villas, condos, resorts on the bay, and spectacularly-designed luxury vacation homes make up a list of options that can satisfy any traveler.
Families love Destin. While the traditional attractions of mini-golf and waterparks are popular, the most popular family attraction continues to be playing on the beach. Beach activities include not only buckets and sandcastles but also adventure sports like parasailing, waterskiing, riding jet skis, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
Ft. Walton Beach, to the west of Destin, has many attractions, including the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park where kids can play with dolphins and see up close all the marine life that calls the Gulf home.
To the east of Destin is the scenic drive along the famed Highway 30A which connects the communities of Santa Rosa Beach, Grayton Beach, Seaside, Seagrove, and Alys Beach—a strand of quaint villages which provide second homes for many families from across the South.
DID YOU KNOW?: This modern, mega-resort beach town was actually founded by a man named Captain Leonard Destin, who managed to get the city named after him because he served as its first postmaster.
